A coronary calcium score test, also known as a “heart scan,” provides pictures of your heart’s arteries to see whether you have coronary artery disease.
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of heart attacks and occurs when plaque builds up and narrows your arteries. Since plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, and calcium the heart scan looks for specks of calcium (calcifications) in the walls of the arteries, which can be an early sign of heart disease. This test can show whether you’re at increased risk for a heart attack before other signs and symptoms occur.
